Identify Your Social Media Marketing Competitors

Businesses today are realizing the tremendous benefits of marketing via social media – are you one of them?

If not, it could be that you didn’t properly plan and execute your strategies. Or maybe you haven’t even attempted to use social media as a means to generate more business, which is a huge mistake.

Most social media networks started as a way to let the general public communicate, keep in touch, and share information. However, they have now become one of the most powerful, yet cost-effective ways to put yourself right in front of your target audience.

One thing that many business owners fail to do prior to building a social presence is to identify who they are up against in terms of local competition. Even if haven’t started to use social media as a marketing tool yet, some of your competitors have.

So it’s in your best interest to see which of your competitors are actually using social media as a means to grow their business, while taking your share of local customers.

  • One way to figure out which of your competitors are using social media is to simply take a quick look at their websites. Do they have social media icons on their website, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google+, etc?
  • Another to find out which of your competitors are using social media is by paying attention to their other advertisements, such as flyers, postcards, newspaper ads, and TV commercials. Do they have different social media icons on them? If so, they are definitely using social media.
  • Lastly, you can simply perform a search on these social media platforms using keyword terms related to your industry. If any of your local competitors are using the site, their profiles should come up. Search through the different profiles to see exactly which of your competitors have a presence there.


The reason you are identifying your competitors is so you can take a closer look at what they are doing to brand themselves using social media. Your goal is to create your own social marketing campaign that aims to out-do them.

Identifying your social media competitors may not seem important, but it is the first step to performing the necessary research needed to develop a solid social media marketing plan that will get results.
